DESCRIPTION

Detail of Nereus and a Nereid from a painting depicting Peleus wrestling Thetis.

Nereus, the old man of the sea, is depicted as an old, white-haired man seated on a stool and holding a gnarled staff resembling driftwood. A Nereid races towards him with arms outstretched. The sister behind her (partly shown) holds a fish.
